Dancing to the Sound
It’s been a while. I’ve been writing mostly abstract stuff when I do write, which hasn’t been very often, so I’m pretty happy to have a new song to post. It happened by accident mostly, just having my morning coffee and decided to scan through some old stuff. The first verse of this was almost done, and it stuck out to me, so I picked up my guitar and threw some chords over the melody I heard in my head. Slowly, but surely, it became this.I love to play it, so hopefully I’ll have the courage to pull it out Monday night at the Tip-Top for open mic. Let me know what you think of it.
Sitting on my porch singing along with the rain
I argued with the devil for the words to say
I could hear her laughing from the room upstairs
crying softly, thinking that I won’t care
I burn some tea to waste some time
distance my worries, maybe quiet my mind
too much time trapped in headlights
too much time out here all alone
Three hours past midnight
and I’m singing this song
[Chorus]
I will not take this for granted
I will not let me down
oh brother it feels like we’re surrounded
and we’re starting to drown
I refuse to leave here empty handed
even if I don’t like what I found
I may not always understand it
I might always get kicked around
but the beauty might not be in the melody
it might be, just dancing to the sound
[Bridge]
dancing to the sound
turning around
make your mistakes
get drunk and get baked
face your worst fear
follow signs that aren’t clear
baby, please take your time
please take your time
dance to the sound
Maybe we’re just thunder, rolling through the rain
Maybe we’re only shadows, just faces with no names
always in a hurry, always on stage
burning out too quickly, a candle with two flames
I do my best to remember, in times I like to forget
to dance in time with silence, and never regret a step
so you went dancing through my dreams one night
the only thing in color, everything else was black and white
then you were falling, and as I reached out my hand
you smiled and said, don’t worry baby, it’s just part of the dance
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
